FAQ's
Often this is not the ideal solution.
The benefits of having a combi boiler are that it takes up a lot less space, which is very helpful in a flat or a small house where there is never enough storage. They can also be more efficient as they only heat the water as it's needed, as opposed to a conventional system that stores hot water until it's used or until it cools down, the latter increasing your energy bill unnecessarily. Also, with the hot water being heated on demand there's no risk of forgetting to put the hot water on long enough before you need it.
While these points may be exactly what you need, it's important to bear in mind that a combi can only heat so much hot water at one time, so if you're planning to have multiple showers running at the same time, a combi may not be suitable. It's also worth noting that when a combi is heating water it makes slightly more noise than a conventional boiler due to the need to heat the water much faster. So if the boiler is located in a bedroom and someone is trying to sleep while someone else is using the shower, you may find it disruptive.
There are a couple of reasons radiators get cold spots, and the reasons vary based on their location.
If the top of the radiator isn't getting hot, or at least not as hot as the rest of the radiator, this is usually because there is an air build-up caused by the chemical reaction of the radiator corroding inside. Bleeding the radiator will allow for an even temperature across it — it's also worth noting that the more air in the radiators, the faster they will corrode.
If it's the bottom of the radiator that's cold, this is caused by sludge build-up. Sludge builds up in all heating systems due to corrosion inside the radiators. The best way to clear sludge once it has already formed is to have a power flush carried out — this involves attaching a high-flow pump to the system and flushing cleaning chemicals in both directions to break free all the sludge deposits and evacuate them from the system. While it's impossible to completely stop the build-up of sludge, it's possible to slow the effects: using a heating system inhibitor will help slow corrosion within the system, and installing a system filter will collect a large amount of the sludge as it circulates — these are designed to be serviced annually, which involves opening them and cleaning out the collected sludge.
There are a few ways to reduce the build-up of limescale, such as inline scale reducers, both magnetic and electrolytic. To stop limescale, and often reverse its effects, install a water softener — by reducing the parts per million of limescale to a very low amount (usually between 5 and 25 ppm) it will stop the build-up of further limescale, and, in theory, eventually filter out existing limescale from the system.
